If half those terms are unfamiliar, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Many companies establishing a Web presence are new to the intricacies that go into having a successful online business. Here are some frequently asked questions to tell you more about what we offer.

Q: What is affiliate marketing?
A: Affiliate marketing involves rewarding one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing efforts. In simpler terms, we help you form partnerships with companies to encourage cross-promotion of products and services.

Q: What does CPM, CPV, and CPA mean?
A: When promoting your business or brand, you will want to buy ads online. CPM, CPV and CPA are three ways in which online advertising can be purchased.

  • CPM is Cost Per Impression, where advertisers pay for exposure of their message to a specific audience. CPM is priced per thousand impressions or loads of an advertisement.
  • CPV is Cost Per Visitor (or Cost Per View in the case of pop-ups). This is where advertisers pay for the delivery of a targeted visitor to the advertiser’s Website.
  • CPA is Cost Per Action, or Cost Per Acquisition. This type of advertising is performance based and is common with affiliate marketing. With CPA, the publisher takes the risk of running the ad, and the advertiser pays only for the amount of users who complete a transaction, such as a purchase or sign-up. This is the best type of rate to pay for banner advertisements.

Q: What is CPC and search engine monetization/optimization?
A: CPC is Cost Per Click, also known as Pay-Per-Click (PPC). Advertisers pay each time a user clicks on their listing and is redirected to their Website. They do not actually pay for the listing, but only when the listing is clicked. This allows our advertising specialists to refine searches and gain information about their market.

Under this pricing system, advertisers pay for the right to be listed under a series of targeted key words that direct relevant traffic to their site. So, if you are a plastic surgeon in Orange County and a user types “plastic surgeon Orange County” into a search engine, we can arrange to have your listing appear. This is called search engine optimization (SEO).

Q: What are key verticals?
A: Vertical search, or domain-specific search, is a kind of specialized search, focusing on topicality or information type. For example, an intelligent medical search engine would be specialized in terms of its topical focus, whereas a video game search engine would seek out results within content that is in a video format.

The best way to understand vertical search is to compare it to broad-based search engines, such as Google. Google fetches very large numbers of documents using a Web crawler. Another program called an indexer then reads these documents and creates a search index based on words contained in each document. Vertical search engines, on the other hand, send their crawlers out to a highly-refined database, and their indexes contain information about a specific topic. As a result, they are most valuable to people interested in a particular area. Companies that advertise on these search engines reach a very focused audience. For example, there are search engines especially for veterinarians, doctors, patients, job seekers, house hunters, and recruiters, to name a few. Vertical search engines cut out the clutter that is irrelevant to users with specific searches in mind. For example, if a dentist is looking for information on ceramics, a material used in dental work, a Google search will turn up many irrelevant results. However, if the dentist uses a site specializing in vertical searching for dentists, the results will be relevant to the profession.

In short, with vertical search engines, we can use a number of differentiating criteria, such as particular locations, topics, and multimedia types to hone in on your audience. This way, we can make sure that when you advertise your product, you get placed into appropriate verticals for better, targeted traffic that is likely to engage with your brand.
